WIRTGEN cutting drums, toolholders and cutting tools are tried-and-tested, proprietary high-tech elements subject to a continuous improvement process. For each application, we are making every effort to optimize the cutting performance while at the same time maximizing the service life and minimizing operating costs.
Cutting drum tailored to performance requirements
Cutting drums for the WIRTGEN surface miners are made-to-measure products: they are tailored to the hardness of the material to be mined and to customer-specific requirements. The process of customizing the cutting drum design to application requirements - including the use of most diverse hard-wearing mining tools and toolholder systems – is based on the unmatched expertise gained in several de cades of experience in cutting technology. The cutting drum for soft-rock mining has a large diameter which permits the throughput of large material quantities. The cutting drum for the mining of hard rock has a smaller diameter and permits high cutting performance, thus enabling the machine to be used not only in opencast mines but also in rock operations or trench construction.
The cutting drum works in up-cutting mode: the more favourable angle of approach produces a comma-shaped chip that breaks in an upward direction. Energy consumption is thus reduced, vibration levels are kept to a minimum, and the machine works much more efficiently.
Closure of the drum housing on the left and right is ensured by two hydraulically lifting side plates. An integrated water spray system reduces dust development when cutting dry materials.
The hydraulically opening scraper blade provides ready access to the cutting drum for tool replacement. The hydraulically operated tool extractor then makes child’s play of extracting the tools from the holders easily and in a comfortable body posture; the process is optimized further by the hydraulic drum turning device.
Intelligent central-drum design
The technical centrepiece of the central-drum design implemented in our surface miners is the cylindrical cutting drum. Fitted with replaceable carbide tools and mounted close to the machine’s centre of gravity, the drum guarantees maximum cutting performance and precise cutting depths in the mining of hard rock. A powerful diesel engine combined with a heavy-duty belt drive contributes to the machine’s rapid progress in hard rock. Optimum transmission of power is ensured by the highly effi cient mechanical cutting drum drive. Our miners are capable of selective mining, and this valuable feature also enables them to mine even thin coal seams or interburden with precision and economic efficiency.
HT 15 Quick-change toolholder system
The innovative HT15 quick-change toolholder system ensures maximum tool utilization while minimizing breaks in operation. HT15 reduces the time required to replace a single toolholder from 90 minutes to only 15 minutes compared to conventional, welded toolholder systems.
WIRTGEN Pick Inspection - Automatic tool inspection
WIRTGEN Pick Inspection (WPI) is available for the 4200 SM surface miner in hard-rock mining design and essentially comprises eight easily replaceable camera laser sensors integrated in the cutting drum housing. The degree of tool wear is measured by the sensors very quickly and is displayed on a separate screen in the operator’s cabin. Operation is quite simple: the entire measuring procedure is completed fully automatically at the mere push of a button, taking only about half a minute – no longer than it takes for dump trucks to change.
Automatic inspection of the degree of tool wear saves time and reduces the operator’s workload as frequent inspections by human eyes become unnecessary. In addition, precisely defined wear criteria prevent any misjudgement of the individual state of wear and help maximize the life of each single tool. The tools are replaced economically at exactly the right time. Servicing procedures can be planned well ahead while machine stoppages are reduced to a minimum. Thanks to the precise measuring results, spare parts can be stored as required. In addition, consistently high production rates allow easy calculation and therefore efficient dump truck logistics. In the final analysis, the optimized production sequence ensures maximum added value especially in 24/7 operation.
