The modular design of the smallest Surface Miner with a cutting width of 2.20 m and a cutting depth of up to 30 cm is also its biggest advantage in practice: the machine can be used as a classical Surface Miner in mining operations and converted into a high-performance road milling machine, thus guaranteeing maximum utilization of the machine. The dual-use concept makes this the most successful special machine in the Surface Mining segment. The machine technology of the 2200 SM is permanently being developed further; new highlights will also be presented at bauma.
The 2200 SM can mine rock and coal up to an unconfined compression strength of 50 MPa. Like all Wirtgen road milling machines and Miners, it is equipped with a mechanically driven cutting drum ensuring high efficiency. The Surface Miner cuts, crushes and loads the material in a single operation. Three working modes make the 2200 SM extremely flexible: it is equipped with a discharge belt of adjustable height for front-end loading so that the material can be loaded directly onto trucks, for example. Alternatively, the Surface Miner can also deposit the material in windrows behind the machine when working in Windrow mode. Or the 2200 SM can deposit the material at the side via its pivotable conveyor belt for collection at a later time.
Surface Miners are used to mine coal seams and pay minerals selectively and in high quality. Deposits can be exploited more efficiently in this way. Such operations as drilling, blasting and pre-crushing are no longer required and the nuisance due to vibrations, noise and dust is significantly reduced. The mined material is cut into small lumps suitable for transportation by conveyor belts. Compared with conventional mining methods, very good and effective results can be achieved with fewer machines, less manpower and less nuisance to the environment.
The 2200 SM cuts precise and stable profiles in earth and rock works which can then be used as roadways, embankments, ditches or tunnel beds. It can easily be converted into a road milling machine and can then remove complete roadway pavements like every other large road milling machine from Wirtgen.
These include a steel bar weighing almost 2 tonnes to reinforce the chassis, making the machine more robust, especially when mining hard rock, extending its service life and reducing vibrations. As a result, the 2200 SM is even better equipped for operations on uneven terrain and the operator can benefit from the improved driving comfort.
Better soundproofing in the cab also means better heat insulation, making life more comfortable for the operator when working in rough conditions and extreme temperatures.
A new scraper has been developed for the windrow mode: the material is optimally discharged from the unit, thus increasing performance and simultaneously reducing wear on the unit, milling drum and cutters. The scraper produces a level surface for the rear crawlers so that they are better protected against wear.
The versatile Surface Miner with an engine rating of 671 kW / 913 HP has a standard 2.20 m milling drum, but can also be equipped with a 3.80 m unit for cutting softer rock which boosts its milling performance by at least 40%. This applies particularly when cutting rock with an unconfined compressive strength of less than 30 MPa. The milling drum with a working width of 3.80 m is most effective for mining coal/lignite, soft limestone and soft marl, phosphate and gypsum. The immense potential of the 2200 SM is optimally exploited with the wider milling drum while cutting operating costs and the consumption of fuel and cutters at the same time.
