The tried-and-tested Surface Miners from Wirtgen GmbH are an alternative to conventional mining methods. Pay minerals are mined selectively, in high quality and without harming the environment – and without drilling and blasting. The material is cut, crushed and loaded onto belts in a single operation. The powerful cutting technology and efficient methods for loading the material are outstanding.

The heavy-duty 2500 SM is a favourite choice, for it can be individually configured to the customer's specific requirements. Rated at 783 kW, the 2500 SM has a cutting width of 2.50 m and a maximum working depth of 60 cm. Its domain lies in the selective mining of pay minerals with an unconfined compression strength of up to 80 MPa.

The 2500 SM's large variety of uses include:

• Mining oil slate and weather-beaten iron ore
• Mining phosphate, bauxite, limestone and other minerals
• Earth and rock works in road construction, as well as in hard rock, such as granite

To make operation more comfortable and allow the operator to work without fatiguing during the long shifts worked in mining operations, the machine has been made significantly more user-friendly and less complex. Operation of the machine is now controlled entirely from the successfully established pivotable driver's seat with the aid of two joysticks located in the right and left-hand armrests.

A new panorama cab with improved all-round view has been integrated to ensure optimum visibility of the working area and of the edge being cut. In addition, the operator now has a clear view of the loading conveyor and crawlers at all times. Better soundproofing is another feature of the more deluxe cab equipment.

The travel drive of the 2500 SM now includes a memory function: as a result, an optimally preset speed can easily be reset by the operator without difficulty. The practical advantage of this function is that the work process can continue smoothly and without interruption at the push of a button, for instance after a change of trucks. Care has been taken to ensure that the load limiting controller also remains active at the same time: in other words, the machine's forward speed is automatically reduced with reduction of the engine speed.

The 2500 SM can also be adjusted to the customer's needs without difficulty and highly individually where safety is concerned. Such features as walkways, railings and access points can be designed to meet the specific safety requirements applicable in Australia, North America or South Africa. The protective cab roof is also available in a FOPS (Falling Objects Protection Structure) version for increased safety. This roof can be folded down hydraulically to permit outstanding access to the air-conditioning when service work is required.

Extremely compact for a machine of its size, the 2500 SM is easy to transport from one site to the next without difficulty thanks to its intelligent design (e.g. folding cab) and is ready for use within a few hours.

Its powerful cutting drum, its 1,050 HP engine and its operating weight of 100,500 daN (kg) make the 2500 SM a highly cost-efficient special machine for mining hard rock.
